Who We Are
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters.
Literacy*AmeriCorps is a National Direct program managed by Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council who promotes and strengthens literacy coalitions as they create literacy communities, thereby enhancing the quality of the lives of individuals and the vitality of our society. They partner locally with the Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans to have the program in New Orleans.
Literacy*AmeriCorps New Orleans members are adults of all ages and backgrounds who have a passion for volunteer service and education. Members believe in education's power in helping individuals and communities to overcome social ills. Members trust in their own ability to serve and in the magic of one person making a difference.

Literacy AmeriCorps is a proud member of the Greater New Orleans AmeriCorps Coaltion. The Greater New Orleans AmeriCorps Coalition is comprised national service programs working in the GNO area. The mission of the Coalition is to increase the effectiveness and recognition of national service in the region. We seek to accomplish this goal through improving the experience of members by fostering communication between Corps, increasing access community resources, and providing ongoing training and support to encourage member development. The Coalition also seeks to improve the management of national service programs in the GNO area by sharing best practices and creating a support network for managers.
