How We Serve

Literacy* AmeriCorps members serve in five different areas. The majority of their service year (80%) is dedicated to teaching and tutoring in literacy provider program sites. These sites provide services in Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED, English as A Second Language (ESL), youth and children's literacy, and family literacy. In addition to their time spent working in the program sites as teachers and tutors, L*AC members also assist their sites with volunteer recruitment and community outreach.

When they are not working at their program sites, members help out the larger New Orleans community through a variety of service projects, ranging from volunteering at Jazz fest and other similar events to assisting local non-profits in cleaning Katrina yards to painting community centers. Finally, Literacy* AmeriCorps members also receive in depth training throughout their service year that addresses not only skills they need to improve as literacy tutors but also a variety of topics ranging from financial planning to CPR certification.
