How We Serve

Literacy* AmeriCorps members serve in five different areas. The majority of their service year (80%) is dedicated to teaching and tutoring in literacy provider program sites. These sites provide services in Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED, English as A Second Language (ESL), youth and children's literacy, and family literacy. In addition to their time spent working in the program sites as teachers and tutors, L*AC members also assist their sites with volunteer recruitment and community outreach. When they are not working at their program sites members help out the larger New Orleans community through a variety of service projects, ranging from volunteering at Jazz fest and other similar events to assisting local non-profits in cleaning Katrina yards, painting community centers, and helping out in many other ways. Finally, AmeriCorps members also receive in depth training throughout their service year that addresses not only skills they need to improve as literacy tutors but also a variety of topics ranging from financial planning to CPR certification.
