Literacy AmeriCorps National Conference

At the National conference this year members enjoyed three days filled with teambuilding, service projects, and sessions, many of which were led by other Corps members from across the country. This included a presentation given by our Awesome Recovery Transition Corps!  Despite a rough ride on the way home everyone agreed it was a highlight of the service year!

One highlight of the trip was the Literacy AmeriCorp New Orleans city skit. Based off the movie the princess and the frog (notice the evil witch doctor played by Kenneth Bryan and his alligators played by Kalynd Kryza and Margaret Hull pictured left). In the skit members told about their experience dealing with students, going to service projects, confronting 67% state budget cuts, and most importantly become becoming a part of the city and the Corps. All of which inspired the spoiled princess (played by Kevin Planchette pictured right) to join national service and "Get Things done!"

Transitioning your GED Students into College
By the Recovery Tranisition Corps from New Orleans - Laura Klein, Gladys Small, Jennie Merrill, Jonathan Fratella (Picture below minus Laura who could not attend the conference but was missed!)

This presentation will bring awareness regarding the extreme importance of further
education for our adult learners. Because several studies have shown that earning the GED
has basically no economic benefits, the New Orleans Transition Team feels that if we are not
introducing our GED students to the topic of college, we are doing them a great disservice.
The goals and objectives of the session are as follows:

-To allow AmeriCorps members to become aware of what they do and do not know about their
students’ post-GED options.
-To provide AmeriCorps members with examples of how to utilize local college resources and
training programs to benefit their students.
-To inform AmeriCorps members about the benefits and necessity of postsecondary education
for their students.
-To encourage dialogue surrounding the topic of college success and barriers that adult college
students may face.
