READ Grafitti on blighted buildings in New Orleans

Thanks to Linda Pompa for drawing my attention to this article on the grafitti artist who has hit the town recently and painted big block letters on abandoned buildings around town.  I've started to notice them, and am especially grateful for the one on the Pizza Hut on Claiborne and Washington - it just bugs me that they haven't reopened.

AmeriCorps Members in the News

Congratulations to New Orleans Public Library Literacy*AmeriCorps members Judith Patrick and Kenneth Bryan for the feature article about them in the Times Picayune a few weeks ago.  As always, good work and lots of activities happening at the library locations.

Literacy Mayor Campaign Initiated

At the August ABE Supervisor Meeting, everyone agreed to initiate a Literacy Mayor campaign modeled after the Literacy President campaign from last year.  We will begin to formulate questions for the February 2010 New Orleans mayoral race at the September 2 meeting.  Please join us or email your suggestions as we move forward on this project.

One Book One New Orleans Gearing Up

The book has been selected (Gumbo Tales - by Sarah Roahen) and the kickoff is around the corner - a Gumbo Tasting on August 26, 5:30pm at the Latter Library on St. Charles Avenue.  We're very excited with this year's selection and the Young Leadership Council's renewed passion for the literacy needs of this region.  The literacy provider community is currently working on a companion teacher/tutor guide to help programs incorporate the book and events into class time.  We will have activities for literacy and GED level students and new this year - activities for English Language and Family Literacy learners.  Thanks to our fabulous teacher and AmeriCorps volunteers for making this happen.  The finished product will be on our "Friends and Partners" page on this website.

Learning Always, Rachel
