What We Do

The Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans

  • We provide professional development and training for literacy providers.

  • We annually host the Greater New Orleans Regional Adult Education Graduation Ceremony for over 150 graduates representing 7 Adult Basic Education Programs.

  • We partner with the YLC One Book One New Orleans project to distribute the book to Adult Basic Education programs along with creating a lesson plan for adult learners.

  • We convene monthly Adult Basic Education meetings to share information regarding latest best practices and provide new programs with networking support to build strong and sustainable literacy programs.  Approximately 15 programs participate every month.

  • We are the originator of the 21st Century Success Principles curriculum which builds workplace skills by means of a learner-centered work readiness curriculum.

  • We provided the Learner Web program to Adult Basic Education programs, a national partnership that provided Internet access and tutoring to individuals to increase broadband use to 5,000 individuals in New Orleans.

  • We work to bring more resources for adult literacy into the region through outreach events and media to educate the public on the importance of literacy and a literate workforce.

  • We initiate advocacy and public policy activities on issues that affect literacy.

  • We help ensure public documents are written in easy to understand language with "Preparing for Storms in Louisiana."
