Why Adult Literacy?

If you care about Public Safety you should know that:

Whether they are the witness, victim or suspect, people with low-literacy have a higher incidence of interaction with the criminal justice system. Offenders are three times as likely as the rest of the population to have literacy problems.

Education for parents leads to better health and education for children. Educated parents are better able to talk with their child’s teacher, understand their family physician and understand their role in the development of their children.

If every adult in Louisiana got a high school diploma and the earnings associated with it, the state would receive $5 billion increase in taxable income.

Adults with a high school diploma or GED are less likely to be reliant on public benefits for housing, healthcare, food stamps, etc.

  • About 25% of adults in our region do not have a high school diploma; about half of those are functioning at the lowest literacy level.
  • Last year only 10,000 students were served in 19 New Orleans area programs.  The average new learner tested in at 5th grade for reading and math skills.
  • Federal funding for adult education is $220/student; compare to Head Start $6000/student; K-12 $6500+ per student; Higher Education $16,000/per student.
